Covalent Organic Frameworks: Synthesis and Applications

Submission Abstract:

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a versatile class of crystalline porous polymers, are formed by covalent bonding and can have various 2D as well as 3D molecular structures. Their unique structure depicted by the efficient linking of atoms in two and three dimensions allows the formation of extended framework structures and results in large surface area and porosity, high modifiability, low density, biocompatibility, high chemical stability and availability of sufficient building blocks. Researchers have devised methods of obtaining precise control in the synthesis routes resulting in the ordered, nano-porous structures with highly preferential structural orientation and properties which could be synergistically fine-tuned, enhanced and amplified by careful precursor selection and reaction parameters. The application of these unique frameworks extends from energy storage, adsorption, separation and conversion, water filtration, bioimaging and optoelectronic devices to name a few. A deeper insight into the structure-performance relationships and possible applications of COFs is critical for both current and future applications of COFs.
