Applications of Analytical Chemistry in Building Materials: From Characterization to Performance Enhancement
Submission Abstract:
This special issue focuses on the critical role of analytical chemistry in the development, characterization, and performance enhancement of building materials, including cement, concrete, asphalt, wood, steel, gypsum, and lime. We invite contributions that employ advanced analytical techniques to address challenges—from molecular interactions to macroscopic behavior. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: In-situ and operando characterization of hydration, curing, degradation, and interfacial processes; Chemical and microstructural analysis for durability assessment (e.g., corrosion, carbonation, alkali-silica reaction, weathering); Novel applications of spectroscopy, chromatography, mass spectrometry, and microscopic methods in traditional and sustainable material systems; Mechanistic insights into performance enhancement through additives, modifiers, or composite design; Advancements in real-time monitoring and quality control during production and service life. We welcome original research and review articles that bridge fundamental analytical insights with practical improvements in material functionality, sustainability, and longevity. Studies highlighting innovative methodologies or interdisciplinary approaches are especially encouraged.
